At 4 weeks they can be weaned onto raw though so you can easily just mix some high quality ground raw food with a bit of raw milk and transition them.Dawn Campbellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16893347875997100598noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3531207726120875533.post-39326298044174089242011-05-26T10:24:05.752-05:002011-05-26T10:24:05.752-05:00We are raising some orphaned 4-week-old kittens an...We are raising some orphaned 4-week-old kittens and are wondering what your formula is.

Our family gets raw cows milk from a local farm.

I'd like to use the raw milk since KMR from the vet is so expensive. Just fish oils. I do not advocate the use of fish oil because of the way it is created. The Weston A Price Foundation has some excellent articles on it.

The best high vitamin cod liver oil is the fermented brand from GreenPasture.org but it is pricey. The liquid from Twin Labs is not as god but it is one of the best for the price and the cats seem to like the unflavored liquid.

It is important that we supplement with cod liver oil, especially for cats not getting fresh liver (raw) in their diets. It has vital nutrients including Vitamin A and Vitamin D3 which are crucial optimal health, immune system function and a beautiful coat. Many brands use synthetic vitamins and have improper ratios so i do not recommend them.

I will blog further about cod liver oil for cats and update the blogs though my main blog is now at http://siberiancatblog.pendraig.com

Thanks for your great question. =)

Dawn
Pendraig Siberian Cats
http://www.pendraig.comDawn Campbellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16893347875997100598noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3531207726120875533.post-32154013118610672842010-07-14T12:27:00.524-05:002010-07-14T12:27:00.524-05:00Dear Dawn, your website is wonderfully informative...Dear Dawn, your website is wonderfully informative. And congratulations on your new "golden's" program.

Please, when you have time, elaborate on why you prefer Twinlab's fish oil. I understand it's nondestearinated, but I've done a little fish oil research myself (for the people and Siberian kitty in my family), and I settled on Renew Life's Norwegian fish oils. They come in caplets, so I have to break them open for the kitty, and they're rather expensive, but I picked them because they are 3rd party certified by the International Fish Oil Standards program--see here: www.ifosprogram.com/IFOS/ConsumerReport.aspx

The Twinlab oil you recommend is much more affordable, so I'm inclined to switch us to it, but I wanted to see what you think of the IFOS website and of their research. I just noticed that they've even approved one or two brands of pet fish oils (to find, investigate the drop down tabs). The question is: Is IFOS approval necessary? Or does it just add expense?

Sincerely, A.L. in GeorgiaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3531207726120875533.post-65609613934738700062010-01-02T18:12:40.488-06:002010-01-02T18:12:40.488-06:00Congratulations :)Congratulations :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3531207726120875533.post-17107104497931238782009-06-03T12:20:21.079-05:002009-06-03T12:20:21.079-05:00They are beautiful!

However in the raw form, from grass-fed or pastured animals they are both nutritious and indeed the cow's milk is higher in many key nutrients that cats need.

Our formula for bottle feeding orphaned kittens (or supplemental feeding for big litters) is made with a cow's milk base. If we were to use goat's milk we would need to add raw liver from pastured cattle or lambs to make up for some of the nutrient loss.

This can be blended together to make it smooth and pass through a bottle or feeding tube. - Dawn (Pendraig Siberian Cats)Dawn Campbellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16893347875997100598noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3531207726120875533.post-90793542903829421572009-03-12T03:33:00.000-05:002009-03-12T03:33:00.000-05:00I was told that Goat's Milk is okay for cats and t...I was told that Goat's Milk is okay for cats and they sell that at my local grocery store and Elphie seems to like.

I use it in recipes when I decide I don't want to take lactaid.

Have you heard the same?Falling Down Laughinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01375817873982476899noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3531207726120875533.post-5752363157073218182008-05-29T11:06:00.000-05:002008-05-29T11:06:00.000-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Judith Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04894126569602651221noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3531207726120875533.post-18926702197008816602008-05-29T11:05:00.000-05:002008-05-29T11:05:00.000-05:00I don't think you can look into anyones wallets bu...I don't think you can look into anyones wallets but your own. I don't think you can judge people while you don't know the reasoning behind why people don't donate. I find your posting judgmental and offensive. Some people actually prefer to pay for their cats before they commit to donating to research. Some people actually prefer to pay back borrowed money first instead of judging others for not donating. If we start talking about breeders that need to be ashamed of themselves, take a peek in the mirror.Judith Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04894126569602651221noreply@blogger.com
